Caffeine can be found in stimulants and plants, as well as in chemical form as a crystalline, odorless powder. It belongs to the group of stimulants and, as a natural substance, belongs to black tea, coffee or cocoa.

The discoverer of caffeine is known as Friedlieb Ferdinand Runge, a German chemist and pharmacist who first isolated caffeine from coffee beans in 1819.

At the same time, Pierre-Jean Robiquet, Pierre Joseph Pelletier and Joseph Bienaimé Caventou achieved the same isolation in France in 1821.

As a result, the molecular formula for caffeine was determined by Liebig and Pfaff in 1832, while Ludwig Medicus presented the chemical structure of caffeine in 1875. This was then confirmed by Fischer in 1895 and could be continuously researched over the years.

In the 20th century, the effectiveness of caffeine was successfully proven and used for different purposes.
